Paolo Nutini - These Streets

These Streets was Nutini's debut album and so thealbum art for it was something new. The first thing you notice are the different colours, all of which give off a happy vibe but have different connotations.

White - the white used here represents virginity and perfection with a positive connotation. Sometimes white can be the representation of a successful beginning, and being placed as the start of all the colours, i think this is its true meaning.

Yellow - yellow is seen to be the colour of sunshine, it represents joy and happiness and gives of positive energy and a good vibe. It is warming and can stimulate cheerfulness. The yellow is a bright yellow which is an 'attention getter' which is its main purpose for being used here.

Orange - orange can represent enthusiasm, happiness, creativity, determination, success and fascination. Due to its high viability, it is used to hear to attract attention.

Red - red can be associated with energy, strength, power, determination and passion. It can sometimes be used to encourage people which is why it is used here.

Black - although black has many meanings, the reason it is used here is simply for the text to stand out and make the album more bold and noticeable.

All these colours are used in an ascending order which can present the was the artist ascended to become better and more known to the music industry. I also think the shades of the colour are very retro which is the feel you get from when you look at this. The text very retro style from the 60's which was a simple time where people where into being free and happy which is what the artist tries to do. The text is written sideways which is unusual, but I also think Nutuni is very unusual himself so this may just exemplify his personality. The pictures are all of him but he doesn't look very happy. The guitar is seen here to represent his love of music. The hair style and the clothes are typical of the indie style so by looking at this you know its indie genre music. The repetitive images of him show that he is a solo artist and not in a band, in each image he is doing a different pose, maybe representing his wide variety of skills as a solo artist. The images are very similar to the work or the artist David Bailey from the same era of the 60's and has been used on other artists such as The Beatles.

Adele - 19

19 is the debut album by the English Singer Adele. The first thing you pick up on is probably the black background. The colour black has negative connotations of grief and mourning which is the impression we automatically get when we look at this. You also notice the shadow on her face. This could mean that she is no longer herself or hiding her identity and what you see really isn't her. It could also convey that she is not happy with the way she feels or looks or even that she is guilty of something and the shadow is there to constantly remind her. You could even say that she has two sides to her personality and touch up on psychological reasons as to why the shadow is there. Her makeup style is simple and her hair style is traditional showing us that she is a simple person. You notice her eyes are not looking directly at the camera. This could be because she is ashamed of something or maybe she is upset, by not showing someones eyes you cannot tell how they are feeling. It could also represent that something is over and that is why she is sad. Next we notice the white writing which stands out. You see her name and the title which could mean that she stands out from everyone else as the white stands out from the black background. The fact that the typography is in block bold capitals shows how simple she really is and not trying to be different and maybe fit in with the crowd. The album is called 19 as she wrote all the songs in it when she was 19 years of age. The reason that it is handwritten could be that she was a child then but now become more mature. I like this album art work as its simple, and i really like Adele's music as she has such a powerful voice. This album cover represents her personalty as being bold and powerful but not quite getting there. All these features put together instantly make you aware that this artist is in the blues and souls genre as it is relaxed yet has a big impact a bit like her music.

Editing

Me and Mahida have been editing our footage for the past 2 weeks. It started off okay but we did come across some difficulties. The first was that we both only had experience with iMovie and this was a huge jump to go straight into Final Cut. I think I have finally got the hang of it now but it did take a while as it is much more complex. There is a lot more to do on Final Cut and i think its much better in term of its ability but it is not as simple to use as iMovie. The second problem is that our actor (Fraser) had practiced the song but he didn't seem to know it well enough. He knew the beginning of the song and we got a lot of shots of that but he was rusty on the middle bit. Therefore he sort of mimed what he thought the words were wherever he got stuck and this meant that for some parts of the song there is no footage we can use that is in lip sync with the song. The third problem was that we did not film enough footage. This we know was bound to happen because the two actors were never free at the right times as us.

We have been working really hard by editing and filming at the same time and are working our way through it. We have editing just over two minutes which means we are exactly half way through and aim to finish it next week. Zaq and Joe are meant to be filming this weekend so we have some more footage and Mahida and I have done some shots during this week which we can also use.

Moodboard

Here is a moodboard i created whilst we were planning for our music video. I put together some pictures which i thought reminded me of Indie people or a pop genre music video.

Atlantic Records

Although Atlantic Records was always known for its Jazz and Blues in the late 40's , over the years it has moved towards other genres of music. It caters for artists from Paolo Nutini to Wiz Khalifa. Paolo Nutini signed to Atlantic in 2005 at the age of just 18 and by 2006 sold two million albums. From this we can see that Atlantic is a successful record company and it is always growing.
